Hostess is going out of business, at least that is what is being reported. No more cupcakes or twinkies. This is sad because 20,000 people will lose their jobs. My question is where is the government?
Now this isn't an anti-government blog, although some could read that into it. My questions is what is too big to fail? That was why they saved GM and the rest of Detroit from going out of business. Yes they have a lot more than 20,000 people on payroll. However what is too big to fail? What is the number?
I also can't find if those 20,000 are just people in the factories or if they include the truck drivers and those people working in their stores. Even if it is "just" 20,000 people that is about about 11% of the jobs that were gained some months.
When the government stepped in and saved the car industry that started something. It opened pandoras box and the genie is out of the box (did I just mix those sayings?).
I am sure everyone out there wants to know what I think, well I assume you do since you are at MY blog. The newly re-anointed chosen one can not afford to lose 11% of its usually gains, assuming the growth is around 180,000 jobs. That is not a good sign for them. While I am not a huge fan of them saving businesses it has become governments job to create jobs.
I don't know why but it has become that way. I don't remember anyone saving KB Toys years ago or even Borders in the last few years. Again you could argue about the number of jobs but it is never fair when a business goes out of business and people lose their jobs.
I will not go into the fact that the strike is what is causing this, I think I've made my thoughts on unions pretty damn clear.
I saw someone somewhere say that they should fire those 5000 people who are striking. I doubt they can do that. Personally, and this will be my only anti-union statement, I would fire those people because they aren't coming to work and then have them arrested if they are on my property. UNION BUSTER baby!
But my question is will the government step in here? I don't know and I'm glad I'm not the guy the make the decision
