Movie Review: Atari: Game Over

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you have found this blog.  I'm back with yet another movie review.  This time I'm checking out the documentary Atari:  Game over.  As of 12/28/16 it has a 6.7.  "A crew digs up all of the old Atari 2600 game cartridges of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" that were tossed into a landfill in the 1980s."

I might have done this review before, but I don't think I finished the flick the last time I started watching it.  The idea of this flick is that the Atari game ET was the worst game in history.  So bad that Atari buried ONE MILLION games in the desert in New Mexico.  However the flick goes more in depth into Atari itself.  You also hear from a few famous people who showed up at the dig and the developer himself.

This flick does not sound like it would very exciting but it is interesting.  The story behind the meteoric rise of Atari and then their equally brilliant fall is quite interesting.  They only scrap the surface of this but what they do talk about is very interesting.

I also find the attitude of the developor of the game, Howard Scott Warshaw, to be interesting.  It is a mix of I can do anything and what have I done.  You can tell that at one point he thought he was the smartest man alive.  Smug isn't quite a strong enough word for how he came off.

There isn't a lot to say about this flick.  It is the basic one sided story about the dig for these games with some history sprinkled in.  At a short running time I feel that they could have added some more of the Atari history.

Overall a decent flick but not quite everything I wanted.  I still give it a 7/10 for the fact that it did resolve an old urban legend.  With a running time of around 70 minutes there are worse things to waste your time on!

Bottom 100 #52: Track of the Moon Beast

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever you happen across this entry.  Today I'm checking out number 52 (as of 12/25/16) on the Bottom 100 with a 2.1.  Time to watch Track of the Moon Beast.  "A young man is transformed into a hideous "moon beast" due to a meteor fragment lodged in his body."  It stars Chase Cordell, Leigh Drake and Gregorio Sala.  Time to go track a moon beast.
  • Wait?  Amazon Prime has commercials?  Oh only for their own shows...that makes sense.  It is like how after anything Netflix suggested an Original
  • Our portion of the solar system?  That is a weird way of saying it
  • Why would they interrupt a moon collision?  Did they really do that back in the day?  Hell we can't even get anyone to care about space travel now!
  • slowest motorcycle EVER!  Almost slower than the car in the opening shot of Birdemic!
  • Why did he take his shirt off?  Isn't he afraid of sunburn?
  • Well that was a random yell.  Pretty sure I'd be getting on that slow motorcycle and getting the flock out of there!
  • Wait...he didn't really react that much
  • Yep random blonde....and suddenly a news report insert!
  • This guy isn't that bad of a reporter
  • 80 minutes is a good running time for these type of flicks, bad ones!
  • Nice, already getting her out in the dark.  Half a day and going to get her on the back of his slowest motorcycle
  • Even better now that a storm is rolling in!
  • So far, 15 minutes in, this is moving quickly story line wise!
  • OH SHIT THAT GUY GOT HIT WITH METEOR!  Oh I guess not, never mind
  • He is working with Native Americans and then just throws paper towel on the ground?  That makes Native Americans cries I hear.
  • You forgot you were going out of town?
  • His place already?  Less than 24 hours of meeting?
  • He is complaining about his parents being divorced?  He is like 30 or something
  • She is scared of that lizard?  Good grief how cheesy.  Then she is afraid of "us".  UGGG
  • Wait...is Kathy played by Judith Light from Who's the Boss?
  • This band isn't that bad
  • Paul has spent a lot of this movie without a shirt on....wait are they staying in the same room already?  How much time has passed?
  • Wait... that was a dress not a nightgown
  • I think Johnny Longbow is trying to move in on Paul's girl
  • And he is shirtless again!
  • I love pre-1980 movie soundtracks!
  • That is a lot of blood, don't think I'd open the door if it was me Stella
  • This flick isn't that bad thus far.  Basically just a 70's flick.  Thus far not a bottom 100 worthy flick
  • How did the bed get made?  Did he make it before he went out moon beasting it up?
  • Nice chin strap chin strap!
  • Wow that is kind of racist music for suddenly having Native Americans on the screen
  • And shirtless yet again!  Is he like Randy from Trailer Park Boys and allergic to shirts?
  • And like that it went from okay to bad with just that one brief scene!
  • Yeah it is a dinosaur you morons!
  • Cranial X-Ray?  Really?
  • For the record he is without a shirt again
  • Yes the meteor shower scared the lizard
  • Don't usually disgust the results with patients?  Really?
  • Not even doctors talk like that!
  • Wait...there is a cell in the hospital or did I miss them moving him?
  • That is the worst transformation scene EVER!
  • Once again shirtless, they really saved on his wardrobe
  • I was wrong, even with this running time this is long.  A few too many scenes that don't advance anything
  • Did Longbow just randomly walk into their conference?
  • Why does he want to kill himself?  He is turning into a moon monster!
  • I'll ask again, what is the time frame of this flick?
  • Can you call someone slowly?  Is that like dialing slowly?
  • What is wrong with her?  What is going on?  This flick has gone off the rails!
  • Oh her foot is caught, still off the rails
  • That transformation was a little better but the monster still looks like something from the 40's
  • Can they even see it?  If so why didn't they go help her when she was screaming for help?
  • Worst cops EVER!
  • PAUL IS NOT PAUL ANYMORE!
  • I thought her ankle was hurt
  • Awesome death effect
This is a screen shot of the monster dying
Thankfully that was done.  I was wrong about how bad this movie was.  It very quickly went to 70's hokey to bad movie bad!  I give it a 2/10 only because it wasn't that awful make me want to shot myself bad like some other bottom 100 flicks.

The acting wasn't horrible but you could tell they weren't even 'C' level actors.  The story wasn't bad but I think there was a Scooby Doo like this with a moon beast.

Overall I can not give you a reason to watch this flick.

Until next time...abyssina!

Bottom 100 #48: Eegah

Because it is Christmas I'm back with another Bottom 100 review, this time it is the flick Eegah which can be watched by clicking on the link!   From 1962:  "Teenagers stumble across a prehistoric caveman, who goes on a rampage."  I'm hoping we see Pauly Shore somewhere in this flick!  (10 points to those who get the reference).  It stars Arch Hall Jr. (Arch Hall Sr. is the director...hmm), Marilyn Manning and Richard Kiel.   But enough talk lets go watch...Eegah
  • I always feel bad that these 60's flicks are on the list, they probably weren't considered bad back in the day of the drive in double feature
  • Lives up at the club?  What does that mean?
  • Women fainted much easier back in the 60's
  • Why is there goat sound...oh the cave man is just carrying one
  • Damn, that caveman is huge!  Oh it is the guy with a nail in his head from Happy Gilmore!
  • Oh yes, referencing the bible
  • So far this isn't horrible at all
  • Tom has some nice hair, it is very Doctor Whoish
  • Any movie with a pith helmet is okay with me!  I do own one myself for the record!
  • Why the shot of the pilot taking his gasses off and on?  Weird
  • Wow that is some "dune buggy"
  • Yes 1960's movie music!
  • I know you're dad is waiting to be picked up and all but watch me show off!
  • Of course they are suddenly stuck...but they get out?  Why have the scene?  A tension builder?
  • fainted again?
  • He is sniffing the girl?  That is weird
  • Roxy's dad has a decent voice, could've done some decent voice acting work I think
  • I've got to say Eegah is quite the artist
  • Yeah, he is going to try to get with Roxy!
  • IMDB Trivia:  After filming was completed it was discovered that the sound recordist had actually failed to record the bulk of the sound. This explains why so much of the film is (badly) dubbed with the sound added in post-production.  That explains it, I thought it was just the bad version online I was watching
  • Two aspirin, calm down there dad!
  • Gave him a shave?  Yeah...that's weird for a "dad and daughter"
  • That is a lot of shaving cream!
  • What continuity error? Shaving cream always comes back...wait she is putting MORE on?  And it is gone again
  • She only took him outside the entrance like two feet?  That was her big plan?
  • Yeah work the body kid, work the body!
  • Poor kidnapping giant, he just wanted someone to love him!
  • Yeah, I'll tell you when I've had enough...baby
  • Even at 90 minutes this flick is a little long in the tooth
  • Strange relationship between "Father and Daughter" I'm telling you
  • He found the house rather easily I think
  • Wait...now he understands how glass works?  He didn't moments ago
  • When does the rampage start?
  • Oh wait...that isn't their house, its the club...but doesn't Roxy live there?
  • Wow that rich dude totally no sold the giant
  • He doesn't have a horrible voice actually
  • Yeah this has seriously gotten long in the tooth
This wasn't a horrible move at all, just a little long.  Probably would have cut 10 or 15 minutes out.  I realize that would have made it a 75 minute flick but I think it would have worked better.

Overall I give it a 3/10.  Not horribly horrible but the length knocked it down a notch.  Not a bottom 100 flick however.  I blame MST3K because they did an episode on it!  Until next time....abyssinia!

Bottom 100: #54 United Passions

*NOTE:  This intro was written after watching the flick*

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you are reading this!  I'm back with a new Bottom 100 movie review.  This time the FIFA history flick United Passions.  "Follows the passing of the FIFA baton through three association presidents: Jules Rimet, Joao Havelange, and Sepp Blatter."  It stars Tim Roth, Sam Neill, Fisher Stevens.  As of 12/24/16 it has a 2.0 over on IMDB.
  • Uggg, I'm about to watch a soccer movie...thanks a lot Obama!  (can't say that much longer)
Wait...this is about FIFA?  Seriously?  Where is The Room when I need it!
    • How does this only have 2 on IMDB?  Who doesn't like a good debate about "football" rules and articles of a League
    • "Only because I was the least drunk"...wish I was drunk right now!
    • At least this flick is only 110 minutes and I'm stuck at work
    • That scene was pointless, we know people used to be racist
    • Honest this is going to be a boring blog because NOTHING of importance is happening.  It is like watching the West Wing but not liking politics!
    • IMDB Trivia:  In Phoenix, AZ, the film grossed $9 in its opening weekend, meaning only one person bought a ticket to see the film.  I hope he got it back!
    • IMDB Trivia:  On June 5, 2015, the film made its North American premiere at 10 movie theaters in New York, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis, Dallas, Houston, and Philadelphia. It grossed $319.
    • IMDB Trivia:  In an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, Tim Roth said he only participated in the film because he needed the money.
    • Yes the famous play by play while you watch crowd reactions instead of the action shot.  Used so often in most sports films....wait....was that a little bit of soccer I just saw?
    • Unless you love "Football" history I bet this is a good flick.  However....good grief...this is boring
    • I will say that GĂ©rard Depardieu had a good performance
    • Wait is the point of these random inserts of kids playing soccer?
    • Wait..Sam Neill is playing a Brazilian?
    • Nice use of real footage actually
    • Awesome, a shot of Sam swimming...that makes perfect sense!
    • Wow Tim Roth really phoned this performance in!
    • THOSE ARE SOME SHORT SHORTS!  One wrong step and that broadcast would have become x-rated!
    • If this wasn't on the bottom 100 I think I would have stopped a while ago.
    • One good thing about this is it is well shot and thought out but man is the flick boring
    • Nice a Montage, don't get enough of those in none training scenes!
    • Wait...he keeps the key and the safe in the same place?  Next thing you'll tell me his luggage combination is 1-2-3-4-5
    • Well that is the logical end...so why not make it another 10 minutes...oh of course the random kids playing soccer that we've seen all movie.  Lets make it mean something
Well that was brutally boring!  Seriously that is my opinion of this flick.  I see why this flick only has a 2.0 at IMDB right now.  While the acting was okay to good it almost seemed pointless.  Honestly it was a history lesson in FIFA ignore most of what you think of FIFA and that is the corruption.  It is mentioned at the very end of the flick but that is it.  The trivia that one person saw it in Arizona opening weekend is correct.  IMDB doesn't say how much it made which isn't a good sign.

This is in the bottom 100 not because it is a bad film, because forst the most part I can't say anything really bad about the flick aside from the boring part I've stressed often.

Overall it just wasn't a topic that really translated well to a feature film.  A multi-part special on HBO or Showtime or A&E or History (That would have been ideal) and I could see this being successful. Put it on 6 weeks before the World Cup leading right up to the opening ceremonies and you might have something.  110 minutes in the theater not so much.  I will stick with the average on this one and say 2.0

To Bowl (game) or not to Bowl (game)

I had a different blog written up today but I heard an interesting conversation on a recent Mike and Mike that I wanted to talk about instead.

Christian McCaffrey, a junior at Stamford, has decided not to play in the Sun Bowl this year to focus on training for the combine and the NFL draft next year.

On the surface this shouldn't be a big deal.  Christian has been slightly nicked up, a football term for being slightly injured, and missed at least one game this year.  He was the runner up for the Heisman Trophy last year and has what some would consider a bright future.

He is the second high profile player to make this decision after LSU star Leonard Fournette also did the same thing forgoing his teams bowl game.

Many people are pointing to former Notre Dame star Jaylon Smith, who was projected to be a very high draft pick, some saying a top ten pick, dropped to 34 after an injury last year in the Fiesta Bowl.

Mike and Mike, along with their guests, all seemed to be understand the decision if not agree with. Other sport stars did not.  Donovan McNabb, former Eagles QB said “I don’t agree with this. It sets a bad example for the kids.”  Other people had similar stances including Danny Kanell on Mike and Mike.

Personally I don't have a problem with this.  Why do people go to college?  Most go to prepare for their next stage in life, their career.  What is the career Christian McCaffrey is going into?  Pro Football.  If I was going into accounting and I could get an excellent job after my junior year but I had to quit the band to focus on a placement test would anyone be upset?  No one blames someone leaving college early unless they are a sports star.  The fact that this kid knows that he has a limited amount of time in the NFL and risking an injury in what amounts to a meaningless bowl game shows maturity in my opinion.

Let me say that I understand when people say this is bad in a team sport.  I get that but I also get that it is a business as well and at the end of the day he has to think of himself and his family.  When most people only get 4 to 5 years in the NFL they need to maximize that time.

Another reason I don't have a problem with this is because coaches do it all the time.  If you want to talk about setting an example, which some people point out as a reason against this, look at coaches. Every year there are coaches who don't coach the bowl game because they are starting a new job.  Or when the team fires the coach midseason.

When a player agrees to go to a college often it is because of the recruiting of the coach yet they can leave seemingly whenever they want.  What kind of example does THAT set?  That a contract means nothing and isn't even worth the paper it is printed on.

The one thing that is interesting to think about, and again this was brought up by Mike and Mike, what happens when a big star is on a losing team.  Say a team that is 2-5 yet they are predicted to be a top 10 draft pick.  Will THEY decide to sit out the rest of the season?  It is an interesting question.

Another thing is that this is going to be a few rare cases.  Most players can't do this because they need the film.  They need to show that they are average players.  It is going to be those top 10 or 15 players who do this.  I don't see a 4th round draft pick sitting out.

Overall I don't see this as a horrible thing. The way student athletes are treated this is one of the few things they can control so I say more power to them!

    Everything is....okay?

Yesterday my fiancee and I got into a bit of a dust up.  Why?  Because I said Stranger Things was "Okay".

Now let me explain, it was that I said it was okay exactly, it was because for me almost everything is okay.  I don't get excited about a lot of things.  Also apparently I got snarky with her, which I don't remember being...but it often comes out without me thinking.  She said something like "everything is okay to what, what isn't just okay?"  In my mind I said I don't know but my mouth hole said "apparently everything is just okay" or "apparently nothing is great" or something that if I was 10 would have got me smacked across the face.

The rest of the evening in the back of my head I tried to think of something in the entertainment field that I felt was more than just "okay".  The sad thing is I couldn't think of anything!  So I went back to my IMDB list to see if I could find movies I rated at an 8 or higher and that I still felt that way about. Here are a few in no particular order:

    1.  I gave this show, which caused the whole conversation, an 8 originally and I guess I stand by it.  It was okay but it did have some interesting ideas.  The acting, considering it was mostly younglings, was better than to be expected.  Also the story, until the end, was good.  As I said during our conversation I felt like the writers didn't know how to end the story and just kind of finished it without a great resolution.  I realize this is probably because they want it to continue but I felt slightly ripped off by the ending.  There were also several plot holes that put it very close to a 7 but the original(ish) story kept it slightly above okay status (and I would modify my statement that caused this whole thing had I had time to think about it and not just make an off the cuff remark).

    2.  The Killing Joke was nearly the perfect Batman story!  It was the grittiness of what I think of when I think of Batman.  It was exactly how I think of the Joker, psychotic yet calculating yet completely insane!  You have Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill doing the voices, who were the voices of Batman and Joker for an entire generation.  It wasn't perfect because I didn't care for the Batgirl storyline here but it makes sense in where the story goes.  However that is what made this flick a 9 instead of a 10.

    3.  This flick was fantastic!  I can't believe when anyone says they figured this flick out the first time they watched it.  They did a wonderful job of misdirection and making you think it was each person at some point.  Personally I thought it was Keaton the entire time, even after you saw him killed, that is how convinced they made me it was him!  The acting was fantastic with Spacey and Pollack really standing out for me.  I can't really say anything was wrong with this flick which is probably why I gave it a 10 out of 10.

    4.  This flick was very odd and very well done.  You've got Bobcat Goldthwait as the director and writer of the flick which should tell you something.  The acting was well done and you have people in slightly different roles.  On top of that the social commentary is so in your face you almost forget it is there.  The comedic timing and the comedy itself is done in a way that it isn't funny but yet you find yourself laughing at times, shocked at times and thinking all the time.  I really enjoyed this flick.

    5.  I don't think I need to say anything about this flick really.  The ONLY complaint that I can see anyone having is the length of the flick.  It is long but it is amazing!  If possible I'd say this was an 11 out of 10.

There you go five things that were better (if only slightly) than okay.

    A new level of backstabbing!

There is a new level of backstabbing that I haven't heard before in the really real world!

Recent Wake Forest found that their radio announcer, who is a former player and coach, was leaking team information to the teams opponents!  I mean that is some cold hearted shit right there!

There isn't a lot of information as of yet.  Speculation ranges from money to being upset that he wasn't kept on as a coach.  I personally and both disgusted and amazed by this!

For me personally I can't imagine doing this...and I would stab my own mom in the back and have her arrested for a concealed weapon!  (I'd like to think the great Gorilla Monsoon for that one).  Ask anyone who has ever played any game where there is a chance you team up and then get turned on..I've done that.  I will continue to do this but that isn't out of spite it is because winning is all that matters!

I also understand that if I can't winning wanting other people to lose.  I am spiteful like that. However this seems to be special.  I don't know if I could do that to the school/team that I played for and coached for and currently announcing for.

That isn't to say that if I got fired and picked up by someone else I wouldn't tell them EVERYTHING I could about my old team.  I also believe everyone has a price....

So if money is involved I can see that too.  You drive enough dump trucks full of money to someones house they will do what you want.  Look at some of the movies that are made out there.  How else did Robert De Nero end up in The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle?

I guess it makes me wonder if I would have done it.  I don't think I would have while I was there...but man what a great story!  Now we need Tommy Elrod to become the head coach of Louisville or some other rival just to complete the typical pro wrestling heel turn!

"IT WAS ME WAKE FOREST!  IT WAS ME ALL ALONG!  Why you ask?  Because you screwed me over.  I left everything down on that football field for this pathetic team.  I bleed and I cried and I gave my heart and soul for this team.  I stayed on because I wanted to make this team better and what did you do?  YOU FIRED ME!  You made me sit in a stupid radio booth.  So when I saw my chance to take you down from the inside I did!  I didn't screw Wake Forest, Wake Forest screwed Wake Forest Brother!  YOU CALL ALL STICK IT!"

    The FINAL Doctor?

So I was thinking about Doctor Who today...because I see there is a trailer for the new Christmas Special...which I didn't watch.  However this got me to thinking about the 50th Anniversary special.

Sorry if this is spoilers for a 3+ year old show but there will be spoilers.  So, if I remember right, at the end to save the Time Lords they call ALL of the Doctors.  All 12...NO 13!

So wouldn't this mean that this is the last doctor?  Because if there are more shouldn't there have been more Doctors showing up?

I realize that I'm probably thinking this through too much but should't there have been at least 24?

Or are they saying that this only happened because the Doctor eventually got an extra set of life from the Time Lords TRAPPED in the whatever clever plot device they thought of that week.

But if that is what was going to happen shouldn't it have already happened and affected the timeline?

So then all the next 12 should have been there right?

Yeah...I'm bored at work is that obvious?

    Movie Review: Why Him?

Last night I went and saw an early screening of "Why Him?" with Zoey Deutch, James Franco, Bryan Cranston.  "A dad forms a bitter rivalry with his daughter's young rich boyfriend."

This flick comes out on December 23rd and it wasn't bad.

    The Bad

    • The flick is a little long.  There are a few scenes that could have been cut down or out completely.  I know whey they are there but it is nearly a 2 hour comedy, which is just too long. It should come in between 90 and 100 minutes, in my opinion.
    • James Franco doesn't play 32 very well.  Hell he doesn't play 42 very well.  He is rough looking
    • Speaking of rough looking Bryan Cranston looks extremely rough as well
    • Megan Mullally looks completely different and I didn't even realize that it was her till I was looking at the IMDB page.  I should know from the annoying as hell voice
    • I hate to single anyone out but the actor who played Scott was annoying...and I don't think it was meant to be
    The Good
    • There are several very funny moments, a lot of them involving Keegan-Michael Key.  He is very funny on his own.
    • The chemistry between most of the actors was very good.  It felt natural and I wonder how much of it was ad-libbed because it felt very natural opposed to written
    • Even though I find Megan Mullally annoying she was pretty funny at points, especially the bed room scene!
    • Even though you knew what was coming (for the most part) the moose scene was hilarious!
    • It was a nice surprise to see Adam Devine show up in almost a cameo role.  He is slowly becoming one of my favorite comedic actors
    The Ugly
    • This flick is pretty raunchy!  Not Sausage Party bad (which my better half shut off about 10 minutes in) but it was pretty bad.  Very funny at times but bad
    • Honestly that is the only ugly for this flick.  Very raunchy even for me!
Overall I enjoyed the flick.  I can't suggest going to see the flick at full price, but matinee or dollar theater it is worth it.  I'm hoping they cut a few things in the full release.  I'd give it a 6/10.  Worth seeing but not a full price flick!
