Survival of the Dead Review

The links above to my amazon store.  From left to right, the DVD, Blu-Ray and streaming versions of the the film.  I've also added links to Amazon on any film mentioned below and IMDB to characters mentioned.

Another George A. Romero film.  This one follows Diary of the Dead [Blu-ray] and has a character from that flick.  The idea is a band of AWOL are heading to an Island with an armored truck full of money to avoid the dead.  However the island isn't what they expect as two waring families are there.

This isn't the best work by George.  The acting is okay to good depending.  The Character Patrick O'Flynn is really good as is Sgt. Nicotine Crockett.  The special effects however are okay at best.  On IMDB they list the budget as four million and it shows in the special effects.

One cool scene is when Francisco is swimming across to a boat.  A bunch of dead heads, as they are called in the flick, are reaching up from the bottom trying to get to him.  A nice touch and one almost right out of World War Z.  However right after that there is a scene with a fire extinguisher that is just awful.

One issue a lot of people bring up in zombie flicks is the the characters can do head shots all the time.  This one there are a few things about that.  The infection has been going on for a while for one.  Two you see them miss sometimes, although not nearly enough for my taste.

There is also a bit of humor in the flick which is nice.  Something that Romero has been putting in his films since Dawn of the Dead [Blu-ray].

A good mix of humor and decent dialog which Romero sometimes lack.  Also the film sets up another flick, which as far as I know was never made, where the dead are smart, much like Land of the Dead (Unrated Director's Cut) [Blu-ray].  Also in the flick one of the waring families believe they can save the dead and are trying to keep his kin, as he would say, alive for when there is a cure.  When I say alive I mean he isn't killing the dead.  Another thing is that the dead seem to  go about their day to day lives, much like mentioned in Dawn of the Dead [Blu-ray].  You've got the mail man delivering mail and one riding a horse and things like that.

I actually liked this film a lot more than I thought I would.  I had avoided both this and Diary of the Dead [Blu-ray] but wish I hadn't.  Both were decent flicks.  Nothing great but well done besides the special effects.
