Johnny Cash Hurt

Maybe the greatest cover of all time...but is it really a cover when it is a million times better than the original?

Couldn't disagree with you more. Is the video better than the original NIN vid? Definitely. Cash's "Hurt" video is a punch to the emotional center of anyone mature enough to know the love, pain, regret, and hollow joy that comes from living life, but that deeper meaning is not apparent within the confines of the song itself.

NIN's "Hurt" was about addiction and you didn't need a video to feel the pain of betrayal (both to themselves and their loved ones) some junkies feel. You didn't need the video and in fact, only got a crappy concert vid with some pretty cool nature footage.

NIN's "Hurt" has a self-evident meaning, where Cash's "Hurt" has a meaning that has been attached to it.

Now, I cannot separate Cash's cover from its accompanying video, so I overlay the emotional catharsis onto the song every time that I hear it, but I relate more to NIN's original song because it exists in and of itself.

Of course this is all just my opinion.

My security word is "rot me". Do you have a hand in picking these ouut?
