1994-02-19 Superstars

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today, 2020-11-15, we are going back to 1994 to check out a mid-February Superstars.  We are building up to the tenth anniversary of Wrestlemania...although without a sign to point to how do we know?  Anywho I am sure we will hear from at least one Hart Brother and the champions mouthpiece James E. Cornette, so enough talking I think it is time to go to the.....mp4
  • IT IS THE KING OF HARTS!!!  Wait.....spoilers
  • Owen vs. Marty?  Yes, please!
  • Cheap shot?  Marty was probably drunk and fell down Vince!
  • A HANDFUL OF HAIR BY MARTY!  HE IS A CHEATER!!
  • Oh man I loved Owen's belly to belly
  • I like that these guys are trying for pinfalls after big moves, unlike today, it is about winning
  • The man who invented the Sharpshooter with another win
  • Oh that suit Vince is wearing, exactly what I think of seeing Vince in
  • JOHNNY POLO!!!
  • How is it Scotty Taylor looked older in 1994 then he did in 1998-99
  • Vince sounds so annoyed with Polo and I love it
  • Can you imagine if we had Madusa in her prime with some of the current stars.  Her vs. Bailey or Charlotte or Becky or.....did Polo just call her a sexy little tart?!?!
  • Nothing to write home about in that match, this is why the division just never took off in 1994 sadly
  • I always like Todd.  He always seemed so excited and genuine
  • I would have liked to see Quake take on Borga, I think that would have been a trainwreck of a match
  • Booger looks MUCH better with that haircut!
  • I do not remember Quake being announced from Canada except for when he was the Canadian Earthquake
  • Actually, the only chance you have against Quake is to attack early and quickly Vick!
  • I love to see Quake throw that dropkick, always one of my favorites especially during this mid 90's
  • I love me some Cornette!
  • WHAT IN THE HELL IS HE THERE FOR?  Luger has no right to be there this is Cornette and Company's time!
  • On the Take Tunney is clean this time?  I think not!
  • Way too much offense on Big Daddy Cool.  He should have been destroying people in 30 seconds still at this point in 1994
  • I loved WWF Royal Rumble game back in the day!
A really good show!  I love Polo and "Vick" on commentary!  The opening main event between Owen and Marty was really good, I could watch more matches between those two.  Kwang, Quake and Big Daddy were great.  I felt bad for Madusa as they did not have much for her at this point.  This felt amazingly quick and I could not believe the show was over when it was.  A really fun show

RESULTS
  • Owen Hart def. Marty Jannetty via Submission

Raw 1994-01-31

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening....whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today, 2020-03-29, we are going to the last show of January 1994.  It is time to get Raw!  Tonight we find out who is going to face Yokozuna first at Wrestlemania.  Plus it is the 1-2-3 Kid taking on Johnny Polo!
  • It will be interesting to see how IRS does on commentary
  • Wait...the Kid is on crutches!  I guess he will not be taking on Johnny
  • Is there a better theme song than the Quebecers?
  • How is this legal?  Marty should be suspended and fined!
  • Polo might not be a full-time wrestler but he just beat Marty less than a month ago there Kid!
  • Polo does a great job of wrestling like a manager, it cannot be easy!
  • HE JUST TRIED TO BREAK POLO'S NECK!!
  • I do not understand, why does IRS wear suspenders AND a shirt, does he not understand how it works in wrestling?
  • THAT IS IRS GOLD!  RAZOR AND THE KID STOLE IT!!!
  • Miguel is in shape!  Round is a shape, right?
  • Is Miguel related to the Colons?  He sure does look like them
  • What was that?  A weird jumping kick.  Was it a botched Enziguri?
  • Once again Owen Hart gets screwed
  • Lex should not have been in the Royal Rumble, to begin with!  He blew his chance at Summerslam, I was there and he cheated with that loaded forearm!
  • Bret was hoping to win because he was afraid of the Rocket!
  • Did Bret ever face Flexy Lexy in the WWF?  They shot the angle at Wrestlemania 9 but did it ever happen?
  • OH MY GOD!  Who is that "Raw Girl" in the commercial!?
  • Was Bill Alfonso doing double duty with the WWF and ECW at this point?
  • Owen is right!  It is not about the family it is about how Bret tried to hold him down!
  • That explains it, I do not have any All American Wrestling and that seems to be where the Hart Brothers storyline is playing out
  • I think I have said it before but I would take these Raw girls over the Nitro Girls any day of the week and twice on Sunday!
  • QUAKE IS BACK!  I always like Quake...well after I got over him trying to destroy Hulkamania!
  • Quake was only back for a few months and by the end of the year was in WCW once again trying to destroy Hulkamania
  • DAMN!  That was a vicious hooked clothesline
  • This is going on way too long, Quake should have beat this guy in 90 seconds
  • IRS has done a really good job on commentary
  • Maybe my favourite powerslam!  This or Goldust
  • Every one of those fans are going to get an audit!
First off IRS did a fantastic job on commentary.  I would not want him every week but it was a great job for a guy who in WCW did not seem to have the ability to speak.  The Owen segment was great because well Owen was the best Hart on the mic.  The rest was just there for me.  It was all about the coin toss and starting what is now known as the march to Wrestlemania.  Not a bad show but nothing that jumped out either

RESULTS
  • Segment:  Johnny Polo/Marty Jannetty
  • Marty Jannetty def. Johnny Polo
  • Segment:  IRS/Razor Ramon (WWF Intercontinental Champion)
  • Segment:  Jack Tunney
  • Bam Bam Bigelow def. Miguel Rosado
  • Segment:  Bret Hart/Lex Luger/Jack Tunney
  • Kwang def. Rich Myers
  • Segment:  Owen Hart (During the above match)
  • Wrestlemania Report
  • Segment:  Paul Bearer
  • Earthquake def. Corey Student
  • Segment:  Marty Jannetty/Razor Ramon (WWF Intercontinental Champion)

1994-01-30 Wrestling Challenge

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening....whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today, 2020-03-29, we are going back to the last WWF Challenge of January 1994.  We have Kwang, Sparky Plugg, the Bushwackers and more!

  • Bob Holly and Bad Barry Horowitz!  Yes, please!
  • Two very underrated wrestlers in my opinion.
  • Barry with some long hair at this point!
  • Sparky had a great dropkick, maybe he still does!
  • Sparky did not really do a great top rope splash
  • Lord Alfred had such a unique delivery at this point in his career
  • Man Lex and Bret did such a great job at this rumble
  • Adam Bomb sure was a big man
  • Is this the first time Gary was on WWF TV?
  • Gary, of course, was a mainstay in WCW/NWA as the Italian Stallion
  • Dear lord look at that dropkick!
  • I always forget how southern Adam Bomb was
  • Interesting finish with that slingshot clothesline
  • I do love the Bushwhackers in a guilty pleasure way
  • Borga was just rough looking all around
  • Samu sure was an ugly man!
  • They are just abusing Stryker
  • That was almost clubbering!!
  • Was Kwang always Savio Vega?
A decent show but nothing special.  The Debuts of Kwang and Sparky Plugg but honestly a completely pointless show otherwise.  None of the matches were great.  Unless you like one of these guys I would skip this show.

RESULTS
  • Sparky Plugg def. Barry Horowitz

  • Adam Bomb def. Gary Sabaugh

Classic Wrestling Review: 1991-03-02 Superstars

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening....whenever it is you have found this blog.  Going back to 1991 again, this time 3 weeks before Wrestlemania 7.  Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper are our announcers which is always fun.  We will see "Piss Drinking Champion" Jake Roberts, Mr. Perfect, Earthquake and more!  Oh, let us not forget an Ultimate Warrior interview!
  • It is the piss drinking champion of the world Jake Roberts!
  • Jake is the scum of the earth but he was good in the ring wasn't he
  • I think this was my favourite version of Hogan....well this or original nWo Hogan
  • It is the Berzer....the Viking...
  • I wish Roddy was still around so he could be announcing somewhere!
  • The Viking looked like he was related to Hacksaw
  • That is the fastest 10 count in the history of Pro Wrestling I think!
  • Damn Davey looked amazing at this point
  • I never really liked the Rockers
  • Also, I was one of those guys who thought Marty was the star...boy was I wrong!
  • They have only thrown 2 superkicks so far, that is not tag team wrestling!
  • Why does Kerry only have armband?  Oh right, it is Kerry!
  • Pistol Pez again!
  • Is Perfect the best ever?  I mean he was....perfect!
  • Brother Love looked weird with this little ponytail
  • Well that was short and quick....oh it is not over yet
  • That podium had to cost 5 maybe 10 bucks at IKEA
  • Wait...Love can out run the Warrior?
  • FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BROTHER LOVE IS A MAN OF LOVE!!!
  • Is Jeffrey Dean Morgan channelling Randy Savage as Negan?
  • It is always amazing to see Quake throw a dropkick
  • One of my favorite powerslams from Quake
  • IT IS FUR FACE!  I wonder where they were going to go with that gimmick
Another great show building up to Mania!  I do not know why but I am enjoying the WWF shows more than WCW.  Maybe it is because I remember this time of WWF and I had not found WCW yet in my fandom, which was less than a year in at this point.  The guys here feel like stars where WCW feels like the minor leagues for some reason.  Anyway another standard show but so much fun.  Wish modern wrestling felt this way!  Until next time...as always...abyssinia!

1991-01-13 Challenge Review

/

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today I am checking out the Jan 13th 1991 Wrestling Challenge with Bobby Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon.  We are on the road to the Royal Rumble!  Let us see who this show went shall we!
  • These two had the best chemistry of any duo on wrestling ever
  • Tom Stone was on just about every show at this point I think
  • Duggan was in great shape at this point in his career
  • I think Stone got a portato in there
  • I am surprised the Powers of Pain never got a title run in either major company back in the day
  • I forget that Warlord was quite agile for a man of his size
  • I always liked Black Bart.  Remember watching him back in the GWF
  • It is weird to see Shane as a good guy but he really did have the white meat babyface look as they say
  • I like that they had guys like Bart and Barry Horowitz and Brooklyn Brawler back int he day.  You did not think they would win yet you always wondered
  • Such a weird time with the Ball and Chain
  • Bob Bradley is another of those usuals on TV
  • I love that they had Heenan off commentary when BBM was out there
  • It is amazing to think that BBM was well over 400 pounds at one point
  • I wonder if Sgt. enjoyed this era of his career.  I think I would want to be a heel, seems like much more fun
  • Spike Jones?  I thought that was a singer
  • We need guys like Tugboat in wrestling.  Now everyone looks the same
  • How drunk was that guy?!
  • How great was Sherri!
  • Quake dropkicking is always amazing
Another great show promoting the Royal Rumble.  Knowing what is coming it was a shock in a week back then!  I miss when it was only 4 PPV's a year and they built to them and it felt special.  Hell, I do not even know what the next big show is because they come as fast as the candy did at Lucy!  I like the old challenge betters because it had Heenan and Monsoon!

Supertape Volume 3 Review

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever you found this entry.  Today I am watching an old Coliseum Home Video tape, Supertape 3.  These tapes were put out monthly back in the day.  I loved renting these back in the day so lets see if I enjoy it as much today!
  • Gotta love some Mr. Perfect!
  • Sad we do not get to see Bobby with Perfect
  • How proud did Perfect look locking that sleeper in...it was...well the perfect look
  • I love that rolling neck snap of Perfect
  • I miss Perfect, can you imagine how good he would be at the performance center?
  • I always like Barbie for some reason, not sure why.  Especially liked him as part of the Faces of Fear in WCW
  • A lot of playing to the crowd here, you can tell it was a house show
  • Strange, they had Barbie use the ropes to win, guess it keeps Snuka strong in the eyes of the locals
  • Future Tag Team Champions the Natural Disasters going one on one
  • I hated this single for Quake
  • GOOD GOD A RUNNING DROPKICK FROM QUAKE!
  • Tugboats dropkick was not an impressive
  • Nice way to keep both strong and have a really good match
  • I know everyone says that Demolition was just LOD clones but I never felt that way.  Similar yes but clones no.
  • Also, I always like Demolition better!
  • Especially Ax and Smash, one of my favourite teams that I hope will go into the Hall of Fame soon!
  • LOD broke up the Demolition Decapitator!  That is rare
  • This match makes me think of the Wrestlefest arcade game...man I would love to own that bad boy!
  • I feel like Ax and Smash are overlooked as performers.  They were so smooth and could wrestler or brawl so well
  • I hated when they changed Demolitions music
  • Demolition was not the same without Ax in my opinion
  • Will this be two LOD matches where Hawk does not go into the ring post?  I will believe it when I see it!
  • Animal has a great powerslam.  It is Dustin Rhodes or Ron Simmons but it is damn good
  • I think that Paul Roma is a classic underachiever in wrestling, had the looks, a decent promo but never got very far in the WWF.  Had a decent run in WCW as a tag team man but never stood out too far
  • Interesting to see Roma use Davey Boy Smith/Warlords finisher
  • Why did Herc not react at all to the backslide?  It is almost like he knew it was not over
  • I love that Hercules is "shaking" the ropes while Roma puts his feet on them
  • Weird to see Gorilla and Bobby at ringside but not doing the announcing
  • Two of my favourites here with DiBiase and Boss Man
  • Sorry I did not "Say" anything during that match, I was just enjoying it!
  • Double Mr. Perfect on this tape...yes please!
  • Heenan is at ringside too!
  • How much piss do you think Jake drank before heading to the ring?  One bottle?  Two?
Good matches but my favourite was easily Boss Man and DiBiase.  Two of my favourites in good action but honestly no bad matches here.  From a time where there were men who were wrestlers not kids and you almost believed or could easily forget and get caught up.  When was the last time that happened nowadays?

Results
  • Mr. Perfect def. Texas Tornado (Intercontinental Champion) via countout for the Title
  • Barbarian def. Jimmy Snuka

  • Segment:  Hawk/Animal
  • Hawk/Animal def. Smash/Crush
  • Segment:  Call of the Action
  • Paul Roman def. Marty Jannetty
  • Ted DiBiase def. Big Boss Man via DQ

1991-01-05 Superstars Review

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you have found this entry!  Today I am checking out the Jan. 5th edition of WWF Superstars from 1991.  Its a new year, the Gulf War is going on.  You have the Warrior as the Champion, Sgt. Slaughter is the top heel along with Randy Savage.  Mr. Perfect has just won back his IC gold and you have the Hart Foundation carrying the tag belts.  I believe your announcers are Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper and The Honky Tonk Man.  Lets go to the tape!!
  • Yes, I was right about the announcers!
  • Hogan making an appearance on Brother Love
  • Had Kerry been able to be clean he would have been one of the biggest stars both in wrestling and Hollywood I think.
  • They never really did do that feud with Tornado and DiBiase I do not think.  I sure do not remember
  • I think this was the peak of Warrior.  He looked the best.  I think he was in the best shape.  Also his out of world interviews were almost understandable
  • Warlord doing his best Phantom of the Opera impersonation with that random mask
  • Too bad Honky did not get into the Royal Rumble.  Also liked him
  • Do you think he, the Warlord, understood how strong he really was?
  • That was the biggest gut-wrench suplex of all time!
  • I love the Royal Rumble theme, one of my favourites!
  • Duggan was always and will always be one of my favourites.
  • WWF loved to make people make random noises for characters.  Tugboat, Duggan, Red Rooster
  • OH MY GOD LOOK HOW YOUNG DUSTIN IS!!!
  • They talk about the "Road Warrior" pop in wrestling, if I was a wrestler I would want the Hogan pop from 89-91
  • Half the people in the Royal Rumble hope they draw number 1 yet whoever gets it is always upset....strange
  • LOVE THAT RUMBLE THEME!
  • I love how Quake was always hopping around during his promos
  • Do you think Jake Roberts drank a bottle of piss before each match?
  • The Big Boss Man is also one of my favourites.  I love this time of wrestling I think because it was from my initial fandom.
  • Do your job Virgil!  Who is, strangely enough, my grandpa's favourite wrestler
  • THE MULKYS!  Well one of them
I love these old shows for nostalgia purposes.  However, I also enjoy them because it was when wrestling was wrestling in my opinion.  Guys being shown as stars and you had to go to the shows to see them in action against other stars.  Once a month maybe you had a Rick Martel vs. Tito Santana.  It was about getting you to order the big four PPV and go to the house shows or rent their monthly VHS tapes like Supertape or Smack'em Whack'em.  It worked on me because I rented those SOB's over and over again!  I still love wrestling and watch as much as I can because as Roddy Piper put it once it is a sickness.  But these are the days I missed, up till like 1995 when Nitro and Raw became show as much as you can and go through everything quickly.  Oh well you can not put the genie back in the bottle now!
