Movie Review: Antebellum

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening....whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today, 2020-09-19, I watched the new flick Antebellum.  From the producers of Us and Get out.  It stars Janelle Monáe, Eric Lange and Jena Malone.  "Successful author Veronica Henley finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it's too late."

There will be no play by play tonight as I just sat and watched this confusing flick.  As this flick is wrapping up I am typing this review.  This flick is rather confusing but mostly well done.  I cannot fault the actors as they were great in it.  Especially the stars.

However, it ended up being very confusing and convoluted.

From here on out expect spoilers for the flick.  The flick appears to be taking place in Civil War days when suddenly the star suddenly wakes up in bed in modern times so I am thinking it is time travel or scrying or something like that.  Then other people from the Civil War days start to show up and I think it is timelines crashing together or something like that.  Then the star is kidnapped and wakes back up in the Civil War times so I completely confused till the Civil War General goes out and answers a cell phone.  Then I am thinking it is an alternative timeline colliding.  Nope, nothing like that.  Just a bunch of white folks who kidnapped a bunch of black folks and hide in a Civil War reenactment camp that I guess no one goes to but these white folks.  Yeah.  They hid basically in plain sight with a bunch of kidnapped black slaves where they killed people and no one knew.  Yep.

I saw someone say something like too long for too little story and it is true.  If this was an episode of Twilight Zone it would have been great.  105 minutes was about 45 minutes too long.  All of her past life stuff was too much and drug out.

Overall this flick gets a slightly lower than average flick, going with 5/10.  If you like suspense type flicks worth checking out.
