Classic Wrestling Review: 1990-06-24 NWA Main Event

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening....whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today, 2020-03-07, we are going back into the way back machine again.  This time to 1990.  It is the beginning of summer and the Main Event is going to be joined in progress.  What is on the show I have no idea so how about we get to it shall we!
  • We came into the show with Z-Man throwing a horrible looking missile dropkick for the win
  • Hey...did someone say something about getting FIRED UP because I think that is Tommy Rich doing commentary!
  • WE do not get guys like Ole Anderson anymore do we?  He just MADE you believe what he said
  • Sting was not the best interview but again you believe what he said.  That is missing in most shows anymore sadly
  • It is weird to see Scott Steiner in the ring right now.  Last night he collapsed at an Impact taping and is having a heart procedure of some kind.  I am sure Big Pappa Pump will be fine just scary and strange
  • I do love this time in WCW in the ring.  The rest sucked but man some of the best ever in the ring including these fours!
  • To think that this should have been Arn and Tully had Jim Herd not screwed Tully over.  I would have loved to see those matches
  • Rick and Barry are being very friendly it is weird.  Are they still doing the Rick Steiner is kind of mental at this point?
  • TOMMY SAID IT!  FIRED UP!!!!
  • The wild eyes of Arn Anderson says more than most guys these days say in a 20-minute promo!
  • WCW/NWA may have been down at this point but can you imagine having these guys today?
  • That was an abrupt DQ, I had no doubt it was going to end up that way, but that was very abrupt
Because of what I assume was a Braves game this was a short show but man how good was that main event tag match?  I wish we had matches like this now instead it would have been all four in the ring with no tags.  All flips and finishers for 30 minutes to fans chanting fight forever instead of lets go Scott or booing the Horsemen.  But what do I know....

RESULTS
  • Z-Man def. Pete Sanchez
  • Recap:  Sting/Ric Flair (NWA World Champion)
  • Interview:  Sting
  • Rick Steiner/Scott Steiner def. Barry Windham/Arn Anderson (TV Champion) via DQ

Classic Wrestling Review: 1994-02-05 Superstars

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening....whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today, 2020-04-16, we are once again going back to 1994 to check out Superstars.  The Steiners take on the Quebecers in a ten minute none title match where the Steiners can earn a title shot next week.  Plus Kwang, Doink and others so to the ring we go!

  • It is so weird to see the Italian Stallion on WWF TV
  • How is Razor the undisputed Intercontinental champion if Shawn disputes it?
  • Barry Horowitz!  My favourite enhancement talent
  • Waltman was good back at this point, too bad he got mixed up with a lot of stuff later on
  • Same with Marty
  • Owen has no problem wrestling Bret because Owen knows that Bret is afraid of him!
  • I liked Kwang much more as Savio Vega
  • One of my favourite moves, that spin kick in the corner all the way to the floor
  • I am surprised that is the second, maybe third superkick of the show
  • Best theme song ever?  Change my mind!
  • I also really liked the Steiners music
  • Rick Martel against The Macho Man next week?  That is a good match!
  • Who would think 20+ years later Pierre would be a major star
  • Jacques always hit the ropes weird, cannot say what it is
  • VICIOUS CLOTHESLINE!
  • Jacques always had a pretty piledriver
  • How is this not a DQ?
  • IT IS THE BEST HART EVER!!
  • Those Hitman glasses sure were stupid looking looking back at it now
  • Wow, Italian Stallion AND George South on one show.  Is this a mid 80's Crockett show?
  • Well that was a quick match, poor George
A fun show especially with the Stallion and South showing up on TV Show.  You have a good Owen Interview, a great tag match, Corny being Corny.  Nothing special on the show but worth checking out especially for the tag match!

RESULTS

Classic Wrestling Review: 1994-01-16 Challenge

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you have found this entry.  We are a week away from the 1994 Royal Rumble as we check out the January 16th Wrestling Challenge.  We have JR and Gorilla as our hosts so lets get to the ring!
  • That bonza drop in the open looks brutal!
  • Uggg, Dink is here, I hate little people, they creep me out
  • Mike Bell was a nice enhancement talent.  I think they should have given him a few wins to make him a threat
  • Walsh looks huge compared to Marko Stunt
  • Walsh's head is HUGE!
  • How great was Lord Alfreds delivery!  I also liked that he gave jabs at times
  • Uggg, I hated good guy Doink, he was a great character with Matt Bourne playing him
  • That was one creepy Doink poster....both of them!
  • One of my favourite submissions that you just do not see very often
  • Boogers music is still better than Shockmasters!
  • Poor Mike Shaw and this gimmick
  • Enter the Batcave!
  • I hope Cory talked to his family before this because Yoko is going to squash him!
  • How was Yoko so agile?
  • Yoko did not even use the Bonza drop
  • Look how young and different Scotty looks
  • The Steiners are not long for the world in the WWF I do not think.  They do not make many more appearance or Wrestlemania 10
  • This bulldog will break your neck!
  • I bought the Sega CD just for Rage in the Cage!
  • BEAT THE REDSKIN!  WOW!
A solid show but it shows the difference between WWF and WCW shows.  WWF had mostly squash matches while WCW shows always had good matches, at least one "Star vs. Star" match.  While I loved the squash matches it shows why WCW ended up overtaking WWF in my opinion.

1991-02-09 Worldwide

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you found this entry.  Today I am checking out the Feb. 9th 1991 edition of WCW Worldwide.  I have no idea where we are at in WCW at this point so I am going in blind.  I did not follow WCW at this point and I am randomly selecting shows as I move data around so let us go to the tape and see what we see shall we!
  • Tony Schiavone and Gordon Solie?
  • Ric Flair on the show wrestling?  Interesting
  • I like the "will beat this person in x time" that they did
  • I think Terri was even better looking back then, without those life preservers ha ha
  • If I ran a wrestling company I would make my stars watch these shows every day.  See what wrestling should be like
  • I wonder if it is true that people would leave if they saw their names next to the Steiners
  • It is weird to see Rick without the headgear, so very weird
  • I hate that top rope DDT
  • Poor Enhancement talent does not even get his name on TV
  • That was sloppy and could have broken the kids shoulder
  • Dissension amoungst Doom!
  • Why did Reed put on a shirt?
  • Love Simmons powerslam
  • Windham's hair is so weird
  • This was a weird heel vs. heel match; yes it is to build to a Doom breakup but still weird
  • Nice to see a young Kevin Nash
  • Look how Nash towers over everyone in the ring
  • What was with Nash's hair?  Is that a mullet?
  • It is weird to think that Tommy Rich was the NWA Champion not being around that time period and only know this Tommy Rich and going forward
  • The Thesz press is the worst finisher of all time I think
  • Wow, Flair is facing a true job guy!
  • Imagine if this kid has injured Naitch, can you imagine?
  • Sad to see Dirty Dutch as basically enhancement
  • How great is Rogers with the pigtails
Another show from WCW that just did not seem to have direction.  No real talk of Wrestle War during the show even though that is where they should be going.  5/8 of the main event were on the show and not once was it mentioned by the commentators.  That was the problem with WCW, they put out shows with matches but never really had direction.  The wrestlers usually worked hard but the office just never had its stuff together

1990-11-24 Worldwide

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you have found this entry. Tonight I am checking out a late 1990 WCW Worldwide.  This was late in the Black Scorpion storyline.  You also have Doom as the tag team champs and Stan Hansen as the US Champion.  Let us see what Worldwide had for us at that point.  (If you want to see the results scroll down to the end)
  • I do love Dirty Dutch on announcing
  • Doom was a hell of a tag-team
  • Weird, Flair did not say a thing there
  • So weird to see Ron Simmons throw a dropkick
  • Ugly looking piledriver
  • Aside from the snap powerslam that Randy Orton/Dustin Rhodes do I love Simmons version
  • Brian Pillman could not talk at this point
  • So weird that Morton kept the RNR gear at this point but Rich did not do something similar
  • How bad is wildfires hair at this point?
  • It is weird to think that Ricky Morton is currently the NWA Tag Team Champions with Robert Gibson
  • I cannot watch this knowing where the Black Scorpion story goes without thinking it had such potential
  • I wish I saw more Stan Hansen, this brief period in WCW I really enjoyed
  • Paul E was good even back in the day
  • Weird to see Mr Hughes in regular wrestling gear
  • I always loved Rip Rogers hair and dark beard
  • Zenk just was not that good in the ring and I am surprised Rip never got more of a push
  • However, that was a pretty good top rope crossbody
  • Such a weird team, Landell and the Moondog
  • It is sad to think about how good Buddy could have been if Buddy did not always get in his own way
  • I know people love the Big Poppa Pump version of Scotty but this was my favourite, 90-93
  • Look how think the Nastys are!!
  • How many Nature Boys did WCW have?  Flair...Lee...Landell all at once!
I do not know why but I didn't enjoy that as much as I do the older WWF shows.  Maybe because I was watching WWF at the time so I have fond memories.  Maybe because WCW/NWA had lesser characters.  But aside from the Main Event tag team match (the Steiners match) this show as just there for me.  I just do not and did not care about most of the guys on the card and I think that sums up WCW/NWA in 1990!
