Classic Wrestling Review: 1991-03-02 Power Hour

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening....whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today I am watching the March 2nd 1991 Power Hour!  WCW was not quite in its worst state yet but it was getting there.  Even though the Midnight Express are gone they still had some good tag teams yet the New Freebirds are your tag team champions at this point!  I was not watching WCW at this point so a lot of these matches and storylines are brand new to me.  And I get to watch Barry Windham take on El Gigante!  LETS GET TO THIS SHOW!!!
  • I mocked that the Freebirds are champions and the first team I see is the Royal Family?  REALLY!
  • It is not that the Royal Family is bad but good grief how did WCW let them run the Midnight Express off?
  • That was AEW ugly!
  • Paul E just mentioned the President of the United States first divorce!
  • Z-Man comes on and my dog starts growling...even he knows an overrated guy when he sees one!
  • I always wondered how guys like Wright or Buddy Lee Parker made out money-wise back these days.  They were on almost every show!  Were they under contracts or just always brought in
  • That was a horrible bump by Zenk
  • Zenk is using the sleeper?  Interesting
  • How is it that Dustin looks as good in 1991 as he does in 2019?
  • This enhancement talent is much better than half the AEW roster!
  • Get showing by Dustin but he is always a highlight of any show
  • That was supposed to show us Terry Taylor did not care about the match?  I do not get it
  • It is odd to think that Hayes thought he was over in 1991
  • Why did Doom try to cheat?  It does not make sense!  Just to break the team up I guess but just have a botched move
  • Yeah Thad Clark stands a chance....oh wait
  • This match has already taken too long, should be a boot followed by a powerbomb
  • ANDERSON HAS A STESCOPE!
  • Nice showcase for Stinger and The Total Package
  • Here is the match I cannot wait to see!  El Gigante in action!!
  • 30 seconds...perfect use of the giant!
  • Loved that they made the giant seem dangerous by breaking Windham open with the claw
This is a perfect example of why WCW never really took off minus the brief nWo run.  Their roster was still good yet we see El Gigante, Z-Man and the Royal Family.  I know they have to try to make stars but when you have Terry Taylor, Bobby Eaton, Ricky Morton, Brad Armstrong, Sting, Luger, Flair, Anderson, Windham, Zbyszko, the Steiners to name a few without really thinking something is wrong!  The bright point of this match was, like I said above, Rhodes.  Go back and watch anything with Dustin Rhodes and tell me he is not the MVP of every promotion he is in!  I will wait.  Okay I lied I will not but its true.  Until next time....Abyssinia!

1991-01-30 Clash of the Champions Review

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you have found this entry.  Today I am checking out the first Clash of the Champions from 1991 which is headlined by Ric Flair defending his title against Scott Steiner.  Sting and Lex Luger face Doom for the Tag Titles.  This was one of the low points of WCW according to most.  I was not watching WCW at this point and I am not sure if I have ever watched this event so let's go to the tape!
  • Uggg, one of those horns are really off!
  • That was a sour note if I ever heard one!
  • Sting's entrance music starts off sounding almost like the Time Warp, never noticed that before
  • The fans are hot and that place does look packed like Jim Ross said
  • Luger with a leapfrog!  I do not think I have seen him do that before
  • I like that these guys do not make it look like they are cooperating with each other
  • So Pee Wee did not see Spivey attack?
  • Damn I could watch Missy Hyatt read me the phone book!
  • So Eaton's music is people chanting his name?
  • Uggg, no wrestler should wear those baby blue trunks
  • Really?  Hyatt and Dangerously is a long-awaited anything JR?
  • It is sad to think about all the guys that Eaton had to put over that he was SO much better than
  • Yeah, when these two are on your main show going against the Freebirds your roster is kind of thin
  • All those who think the Freebirds are losing stand on your heads
  • I remember in the only good WCW game Hayes finisher was that bulldog.  I loved that game!
  • The lights in the Teepee?  Come on JR!
  • Kind of made the Freebirds look weak only winning because the ref missed the tag
  • Why is Paul in the tiny window and Dusty in the big window?
  • Joey Maggs?  Really?  He has NEVER won a match and is on the Clash?
  • Oh well it is against Sid so that makes sense
  • This one makes sense because they needed to continue to have Sid look dominate.  Too bad they did not feed him Z-Man but he is still the TV champ
  • I love his powerbomb, dropping down to his knee making it look even more vicious....no pun intended
  • Why is Taylor the Computerized Man if he is not part of the York Foundation yet?
  • I always thought that Taylor looked better with the short hair, made him standout
  • Ugly finish for sure
  • Ranger Ross just had a weird look to him
  • Hello ladies!
  • Two of the best of all time in the Horsemen
  • The Renegade Warriors did have weird charisma
  • I LOVE ARN ANDERSONS STUN LOOK!
  • I know Dusty had to shill for the show but Scott Steiner vs. Ric Flair is not the greatest World Title match on TV ever Dream!
  • Best move ever!  Double A spinebuster
  • Vader and Stan were great, I miss guys like that in wrestling
  • Buddy Lee Parker?  Seriously?
  • Who did Buddy Lee have blackmail footage on to keep his job all those years in WCW?
  • What in the blue hell was Buddy Lee doing?
  • That was pointless....well there were two points....
  • Why is Kevin Sullivan there...oh others besides the Horsemen are there
  • Worst cheerleaders ever after what we just saw
  • Flair has already made Scotty look like a star
  • Weird to see Flair in yellow trunks
  • It is weird to see Scotty Steiner like this given how he looked 10 years later as Big Poppa Pump
  • I never felt Flair's Figure Four was that dangerous as people constantly fought out of it.  Did he ever win a major match via submission with it without something else happening first?
  • Flair's punches are underrated
  • Flair is flopping around like a fish after that Tiger Driver
  • Why is Nick Patrick letting Rick Steiner get involved so much?
Overall this was an okay show.  The stars were good and all the wrestling...well minus the Z-Man match...was fine but it felt like something was missing.  What I cannot say.  The show was just there ya know.  The crowd was hot but nothing was special ya know.  Felt like the show never left first gear and that everyone was just there not really giving 100%.  Overall a fine show but nothing to go out of your way to watch

1990-11-24 Worldwide

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening...whenever it is you have found this entry. Tonight I am checking out a late 1990 WCW Worldwide.  This was late in the Black Scorpion storyline.  You also have Doom as the tag team champs and Stan Hansen as the US Champion.  Let us see what Worldwide had for us at that point.  (If you want to see the results scroll down to the end)
  • I do love Dirty Dutch on announcing
  • Doom was a hell of a tag-team
  • Weird, Flair did not say a thing there
  • So weird to see Ron Simmons throw a dropkick
  • Ugly looking piledriver
  • Aside from the snap powerslam that Randy Orton/Dustin Rhodes do I love Simmons version
  • Brian Pillman could not talk at this point
  • So weird that Morton kept the RNR gear at this point but Rich did not do something similar
  • How bad is wildfires hair at this point?
  • It is weird to think that Ricky Morton is currently the NWA Tag Team Champions with Robert Gibson
  • I cannot watch this knowing where the Black Scorpion story goes without thinking it had such potential
  • I wish I saw more Stan Hansen, this brief period in WCW I really enjoyed
  • Paul E was good even back in the day
  • Weird to see Mr Hughes in regular wrestling gear
  • I always loved Rip Rogers hair and dark beard
  • Zenk just was not that good in the ring and I am surprised Rip never got more of a push
  • However, that was a pretty good top rope crossbody
  • Such a weird team, Landell and the Moondog
  • It is sad to think about how good Buddy could have been if Buddy did not always get in his own way
  • I know people love the Big Poppa Pump version of Scotty but this was my favourite, 90-93
  • Look how think the Nastys are!!
  • How many Nature Boys did WCW have?  Flair...Lee...Landell all at once!
I do not know why but I didn't enjoy that as much as I do the older WWF shows.  Maybe because I was watching WWF at the time so I have fond memories.  Maybe because WCW/NWA had lesser characters.  But aside from the Main Event tag team match (the Steiners match) this show as just there for me.  I just do not and did not care about most of the guys on the card and I think that sums up WCW/NWA in 1990!
